What We Believe

At First Congregational United Church of Christ in Eagle River, we are a faith community committed to living out the Gospel of Jesus Christ in both word and action. As part of the United Church of Christ (UCC), we embrace unity in diversity and seek to follow Christ’s teachings with love, justice, and inclusivity.

Our Faith Tradition

The United Church of Christ is a denomination formed from four Christian traditions:

  • Congregational Churches

  • Christian Churches

  • Evangelical Synod of North America

  • Reformed Churches

Since its formation, the UCC has upheld the belief that Christians do not always have to agree to live in communion together. Our motto, “That they may all be one” (John 17:21), reflects our commitment to unity among all believers.

Our Core Beliefs

The Authority of Scripture

We affirm the Bible as the foundational witness to God’s word. Our faith is shaped by the creeds of the early church and the confessions of the Reformation, while maintaining the freedom of conscience in interpretation.

Jesus Christ as Head of the Church

We believe that Christ alone is the head of the Church. Each congregation is self-governing and guided by the Holy Spirit in faith and practice.

The Sacraments: Baptism & Holy Communion

We recognize two sacraments:

  • Baptism – A sign of God’s grace, joining individuals to the body of Christ.

  • Holy Communion – A sacred meal of remembrance, thanksgiving, and renewal in Christ’s presence.

The UCC Statement of Faith

We believe in:

  • God, the Eternal Spirit, who calls the world into being.

  • Jesus Christ, our Savior, who reconciles the world to God.

  • The Holy Spirit, who renews the Church and unites believers in faith.

  • The mission of the Church, to proclaim the Gospel, serve others, and work for justice and peace.
